Home Renovations for Accessibility

occupational therapists are the experts in home renovations and modifications for accessibility…

We will work with your contractor, insurance agency, family to ensure that your home is accessible, safe, and will meet your needs for both now, and in the future.

In our combined thirty years of experience, we have seen what happens when people don’t know what they are doing when performing renovations for accessibility. While well-meaning, some contractors and builders are not trained to make your home fit your needs. Occupational therapists are trained in assessing the whole person, and matching it to the environment.

Whether it’s as simple as putting in a short ramp, redoing a bathroom, or performing a whole home renovation for wheelchair accessibility, we can help you plan out your project to be as efficient and effective.

What to Expect:

1st Visit - In Your Home

On the day of your assessment, we meet with you in your home and look at the following areas:

  • assess how you are moving around your home and accessing all of the areas you need to access

  • assess any barriers to your home

  • discuss and brainstorm possible solutions. Recommendations may include:

    • Equipment prescription.

    • Home modifications.

    • Adaptive techniques and strategies for independent living.

    • Referral to other services as needed.

    • For any recommendations that require additional and ongoing support, your occupational therapist is available to you to assist with things such as equipment implementation, renovations, or home modification.

    • A formal written report can be provided if requested. Report writing is billed at same rates as occupational therapy assessment and treatment.

  • discuss possible funding options that may be available to you

  • arrange renovation or modification quotes with builders/contractors/architects that you have selected, or we can provide a list of trusted contractors we have worked with

  • discuss “next steps” with you which may involve a follow-up visit

2nd Visit - Meet with the Contractor/Builder/Architect

We can meet with you and the contractor, builder, or architect to discuss options for modifying or renovating your home. We will work with you to identify solutions that align with your vision and budget.

Further Follow-Ups

Sometimes large home renovations will require further visits where we can meet with you again as the construction is underway or nearing completion to ensure that your home will address your needs and concerns. We are available for consultation all the way through to the completion of the project to ensure you have someone working to ensure your wants and needs are met.
