Cognitive Assessment

What is a Cognitive Assessment?

At Enable Health, we offer Cognitive Assessment and Cognitive Rehabilitation services to meet your needs. Your occupational therapist will work with you to help assess and identify areas where you may be having difficulties, and what your goals are. Your occupational therapist will develop strategies and a rehabilitation plan with you to assist with overcoming struggles.

For example:

  • Would you like to return to college but have difficulty concentrating or focusing on tasks? Need suggestions for how to study and set up your home office to improve productivity and reduce distractions?

  • Do you get “brain fatigue” or feel overwhelmed at times, seemingly for no reason?

  • Have you had a stroke or brain injury and feel like your brain doesn’t work as well as before?

Areas of cognition that your occupational therapist may assess include

  • Attention: the ability to concentrate on a task or piece of information.

  • Visual Processing: the ability to take in information with your eyes, and how your brain processes that information.

  • Processing Speed: how quickly your brain is able to process information that it is receiving.

  • Memory: short term and long term memory. This includes the ability to encode, store and retrieve information in your brain.

  • Executive Functioning: the ability to plan, initiate and perform higher-level thinking such as making decisions and problem solving.

What is Cognitive Rehabilitation

Cognitive Rehabilitation is the process of working on some of the areas identified in your cognitive assessment. The purpose is to help improve your ability to manage in daily life by improving or compensating for a cognitive impairment. It requires an initial cognitive assessment in order to identify which areas of cognition are most difficult. After the initial assessment, a personalized treatment program will be designed for you based on your goals, with ongoing education, follow-up, and adaptation of the program. The length of each program is tailored to the needs of each individual client.

What to Expect

  • Your occupational therapist will meet with you one-on-one. If you would like, a friend or family member can also be present for the assessment.

  • Your assessment will take place in a quiet and controlled environment such as at your kitchen table, or in a community setting to obtain real-life information about how you perform daily tasks.

  • After the assessment is complete, your occupational therapist will design a personalized treatment program to meet your individual needs and goals.

  • Treatment modalities may include pen and paper tasks, worksheets, table-top activities, community access, or tasks to be completed in-between sessions.

  • As your treatment goals are completed, you and your occupational therapist will meet to discuss creating new goals or concluding your sessions.

  • Even after you have concluded with the cognitive rehabilitation program, your occupational therapist is available to you for further assessment and treatment at a later stage as needed.
